Assistance Dogs
Your one-stop guide to travelling through Manchester Airport with your assistance dog
Have a comfortable journey through the airport.
Recognised assistance dogs are welcome in the terminal and can travel on planes, provided they meet the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme, and you notify your airline in advance.
Your assistance dog must be trained by an accredited organisation. You can find a list of approved training organisations here:
Notify your airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before your trip to allow time for necessary arrangements. For more information on travelling with your assistance dog, visit Guide Dogs UK.
Assistance Dog Relief Areas are located in all terminals, both before security (landside) and in the Departures area. Our Assisted Travel team will be available to provide support on the day of your travel.
Please note that the only dogs we permit in our terminal buildings are Assistance Dogs.
Before you travel
- Contact your airline directly at least 48 hours before your travel to ensure all necessary arrangements are made.
- Ensure your dog has the required paperwork for re-entry into the UK. For more details on documentation, visit the Civil Aviation Authority - Guide Dogs website.
Departing from Manchester Airport
When you arrive at the airport, please head over to the Assisted Travel Reception Point before you go through security. This will allow our team to complete the important paperwork.
After registration, our service partner will assist you with Check-in and guide you to Departures if needed. We make sure you are comfortable and support you and your assistance dog throughout your journey.
Dog Relief Areas are available in each terminal. Contact an Assisted Travel team member if your dog needs to use this facility.
Security process
Both you and your assistance dog must go through security screening to meet UK standards. We aim to make this process as smooth as possible.
When you reach the security lane, our officers will ask you to place your personal belongings into the screening trays. Your assistance dog can keep its harness on.
You’ll then be asked to step into a body scanner for the check. Your assistance dog cannot enter the scanner with you. An officer will hold your dog briefly during this step.
After completing the scan, you’ll be seated while your dog’s harness is inspected and swabbed. Once this is done, the process is complete, and you can continue with your journey.
Please remember to collect all your belongings from the screening trays before leaving the area. If needed, our friendly Assisted Travel and security team will be happy to assist you.
For added privacy, we also offer a separate search room where you and your assistance dog’s harness can be screened.
Arriving at Manchester Airport
For your return journey back to Manchester Airport, your airline should have informed our Assisted Travel team about your arrival. Information provided will include:
- Your name
- Flight number
- Pet Passport or third-country veterinary certificate details
- Microchip number
- Vaccination records
A trained agent will meet your aircraft upon arrival. Please remain onboard until all other passengers have disembarked, and our trained team member has completed the necessary documentation checks.
Once the checks are complete, you may proceed to immigration and then to Arrivals, with or without assistance from our Assisted Travel team.
