If you’re looking for a hidden gem, you’ll love this North Macedonian lakeside town built on the northeastern shore of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world.
It’s known for its rich history with over twenty distinctive churches, ancient monasteries and fascinating sites. Perched on top of a cliff, the picturesque St. John at Kaneo is one of Ohrid’s most iconic landmarks. Explore the grounds and climb the walls of the nearby Samuel's Fortress where you’ll see exceptional views of the lake, mountains and surrounding towns beyond. Ohrid also has a well-preserved Hellenistic Theatre which dates back to 200 BC and still hosts performances and events.
Ohrid’s Old Town is lined with cobbled streets which can be a little steep and uneven, so mind your step. Many buildings are dotted with signs telling you about their historical significance. Shops, bars and restaurants can be found on Old Bazaar Street, but there are plenty of beach bars and family run restaurants to be found elsewhere. The restaurants lining the waterfront tend to be more expensive, but they offer incredible views over the clear waters and are still significantly cheaper than those in Italy or France.
Make sure you sample Rakija, the local spirit, while you’re here. Also, North Macedonia is a proud wine-producing area and some wineries offer tours and tastings. In June, you can visit the annual Wine Fest when the main promenade is filled with wine stalls.
One of the best ways to explore Ohrid is by boat tour stopping off at key landmarks such as the Bay of Bones, an archeological Bronze Age site with an interesting museum. Soak in the peaceful atmosphere of the Monastery of St. Naum and the nearby beach which is a superb swimming spot. Boats come and go from Ohrid’s harbour until late in the evening, offering sunset cruises with a well-stocked bar. If you’d like to get closer to the water, you can hire a paddle board which is a relaxing way to experience the lake’s serene waters.
A water taxi or boat will also take you to visit some of the other villages around the lake like Trpejca and Peštani. It’s the best way to discover the area’s charming buildings, interesting local markets, and friendly locals enjoying a traditional Macedonian way of life away from the usual tourist crowds.
