About Santorini

About Santorini

If you’re looking for a true Greek island experience, there are few places more authentic than Santorini. The island is defined by a submerged volcanic crater, left when the centre collapsed thousands of years ago during an eruption. This incredible history, along with the local’s white-washed, blue-domed villas, has made Santorini a uniquely picturesque destination for many holiday-makers and backpackers.

With reliable blue skies most days of the year and an average temperature of 29°C across the summer months, a visit to Santorini is as close as you can come to a guarantee of good weather. There’s plenty of ways to enjoy the sun as well, including the blackened beaches of Kamari and Katharos, open-air nightclubs and a range of local watersports. No matter how you spend the day, you can always end it with the legendary Oia golden sunset, the basis for many stories and myths surrounding the island.

Specialising in indulgent luxury, the hotels of Santorini are considered one of the highlights of the island. While few can get on the guest list of the extravagant Hotel Celestia Grand, which showcases both elegant architecture and breath-taking views of the island, there are several hotels that have followed in its footsteps at a more reasonable price. Both Anastasis Apartments and Astra Suites boast incredible views as well as Santorini’s iconic architecture and pools overlooking the Aegean Sea.

A fashionista’s paradise, shopping in Santorini is done almost exclusively in the island’s world-famous boutiques. Whether you’re exploring the jeweller’s found along Ypapantis Street in Fira or the small stores owned by many of the world’s leading fashion designers across the island, if you love fashion then you’re sure to love shopping in Santorini. Alternatively, there’s plenty of other shopping to be done with lots of local produce including pumice, silk and wine.

The cuisine of Santorini is fish-based, as you’d expect from an island nation, with a focus on local produce. If you’re looking for a fine-dining experience, then Le Ciel Restaurant, a common wedding venue, is a must. With an exquisite menu that blends classical Mediterranean flavours with modern cooking, Le Ciel Restaurant offers an experience you’ll never forget. As for drinking, the island is famed for its rich wines and a vibrant nightlife, featuring many open-top bars and nightclubs.

With a predominantly Greek Orthodox population, Santorini has many traditions and festivals that both adults and children are sure to enjoy:

Santorini Jazz Festival

Celebrating the island’s love of smooth Jazz, this festival runs throughout July and sees many musicians from around the world come to add their soothing melodies to the beautiful landscape. The combination of sun, sea and relaxing music makes this the perfect time to visit.

Ifestia Festival

Held towards the end of August, Ifestia Festival is dedicated to the volcanic eruption that collapsed the centre of the island. There are performances and processions throughout the day as everyone counts down to the eruption, which is depicted by a huge firework display across the entire island, filling the sky with light and colour.

International Music Festival

The International Music Festival takes place towards the start of September as artists from around the world are invited to perform in a series of concerts. The event transforms Santorini with local acts playing alongside superstar talent throughout the day and night. There’s something for all tastes as performances vary from classical musicians to the latest dance trends and, as the festival lasts for several days, everyone can get to their favourite acts.
