Runway Closures 2011

The work
In 2011 we carried out a £20 Million refurbishment programme on Runway 1 (Runway 23R/05L). The project involved:
• The laying of 60,220 Metres of ducts
• The replacement 110 Kilometres of cable
• The construction of 370 Draw pits (man holes)
• 23 major drainage repairs
• The replacement of over 1,000 individual light fittings.
• The resurfacing of the entire length (3,048m) and width (46m) of the runway.
• Night time use of Runway 2 (Runway 23L/05R) to allow overnight works to take place on Runway 1.

Film clips
As a part of this project we have compiled film clips to explain what work needed to be done and actual film of various stages of the work being carried out. There will be one final film produced in early 2012 in which we will summarise the programme and show footage of before and after. We also provided text updates as the project progressed and these can be found on the links top right.

Before the work
Before we commenced this vital work we carried out eighteen months of consultation with the local community; to understand how we could carry out the work in a way that would cause the least possible disturbance to our neighbouring communities. These clips explain what work was required and how the programme was planned in a way that would cause the least disturbance.

Pits and Ducts
The runway light fittings and wiring all needed replacing and this involved the construction of a new ‘ring main’. This film shows a typical nights work in March 2011, constructing new pits and ducts.

Runway resurfacing & lighting installation
The replacement runway surface is a new material that provides better drainage and friction values and will require less maintenance in the future. Manchester Airport has the first runway in the United Kingdom with such a surface. Manchester Airport now also has the first runway in Europe lit by low-energy LED lighting. This will reduce our energy use and so carbon emissions and these new lights will also require less maintenance providing community benefits in the future. This video clip shows the laying of the new surface in August and the start laying cables and fittings for the new lighting system.

Review of the Runway Refurbishment Programme
We are currently filming footage for a new clip. The new clip will include interviews of key members of the works team and show footage before and after the refurbishment programme took place.
