Runway Closures 2010 & 2011

2010 taxiway and runway maintenance

During 2010 we need to carry out a programme of taxiway improvements and maintenance. The works will involve widening a number of taxiways to reflect the more modern and large aircraft types now using Manchester Airport.

For more information please see this video clip. The programme includes work to the taxiways that adjoin the original runway and will require 18 weeks of nighttime runway closures to complete.

To accommodate the runway closures Runway 23L/05R (Runway 2) will be used as the sole runway between 2230 and 0600 hours, Sunday -Thursday nights only from 2230 hours on Sunday 11th April until 0630 hours on Friday 13th August 2010.

In the event of bad weather/low visibility, the works may be deferred and our usual operations using Runway 23R/05L will be reinstated. Normal operations will be used at all other times. As always, the prevailing weather conditions will determine in which direction aircraft will take-off and land.

We regret the disturbance that these temporary changes to our nighttime operations may cause to you and would like to reassure you that every effort has been made to reduce the disruption and time taken to complete the works.

We are aware that nighttime maintenance on the original runway can cause disturbance to our neighbouring communities. Therefore we started our consultation for this project in January 2009, almost two years in advance of the start date. We discussed the project with the Manchester Airport Consultative Committee (MACC) in January. We then held a special meeting with the members of the MACC Technical Advisory Group in April to ensure the works are planned in such that they cause the least possible disturbance to the local community. We have also met with other elected representatives at meetings with 24 Town and Parish Councillors and we have sought their views in a similar fashion.

We have also used twelve of the Mobile Outreach events that we have held this year and our weekly visits to Knutsford Library, to talk to people about the closures, at the same time as we have discussed other issues of concern and interest. We are keen to understand if there are any actions we can take to reduce the disturbance.

The original runway (Runway 05L/23R), was last resurfaced in winter 1995/1996 and is the principle landing surface at Manchester Airport, in use 24 hours a day.

The runway now requires a full refurbishment to include resurfacing, rewiring and replacement of all light fittings. The Instrument Landing Systems are being replaced in the summer/autumn of 2009 and the remainder of the refurbishment will take place in 2010/2011. The refurbishment will require extensive of nighttime runway closures and we will update you on the programme of works as details become available.

Please return to this page to keep you informed of the programme of works.
