Runway Closures

Runway Closures 2014
In February/March/April we carried out a programme of taxiway reconstruction. In total the works required 35 nights of closure of Runway 1 and night time use of Runway 2; 29% of the nights available so far in 2014. Whilst Runway 1 was closed for these taxiway works we carried out the routine maintenance tasks necessary to keep our busiest runway in a safe and usable condition.

During June and July 2014 we are carrying out some runway maintenance and taxiway reconstruction (at the northern end of the airfield). The programme will require some nights of Runway 1 (Runway 23R/05L) closure in order to facilitate some runway surface repairs and works to the taxiways adjoining the Runway. Whilst the Runway is closed we will also carry out routine maintenance tasks necessary to keep our busiest runway in a good and safe condition.

Runway 2 (Runway 23L/05R) will be used as the sole runway between:

  • 2130 and 0630 hours; starting at 2130 hours on Sunday 22nd until 0630 hours on Friday 27th June 2014.
  • 0200 and 0500 hours on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th July 2014.

As always, the prevailing weather conditions will determine in which direction aircraft will take-off and land.
We are sorry for the disturbance that these temporary changes to our nighttime operations may cause to you and assure you that such closures are only arranged when essential work is required. We will publish the details of future nighttime closures of Runway 1 (and so nighttime use of Runway 2) on this page; as they become available.

Regular Maintenance
The £Multi-Million refurbishment of Runway 1 in 2010-2011 incorporated works that have reduced maintenance requirements; but it is our prime runway and is in use 24 hrs a day, seven days a week. The Runway and its’ adjoining taxiways experience heavy usage and naturally require maintenance; line painting, drain clearing, surface inspection (on foot by a team of operations colleagues) and other unglamorous housekeeping duties are all required to keep the Runway in a good condition. These tasks naturally require the runway to be closed to traffic.
In July 2013 we had to remove rubber deposits (this is a routine activity) from both our runways and we created the video clip below:
In 2013 we had a total of 15 nights of runway closures in February/April/June/July/November, 4% of the nights available; compared to 22 nights/6% in 2012. In 2014  maintenance works to the Runway 1 and reconstruction of its' adjoining taxiways will require some runway closures and we will continue to post details/dates of these works as they become available.

Runway Refurbishment 2010-2011

The work
Over 2010-2011 we carried out a £20 Million refurbishment programme on Runway 1 (Runway 23R/05L). As a part of this project we compiled video clips to explain what work needed to be done and actual film of various stages of the work being carried out. Below are two video clips that review the project and our communication strategy for the works.
