The time for popping champagne corks and skies filled with fireworks is nearly upon us. As New Year erupts, destinations across the globe celebrate it with their own particular pizazz. Here’s our pick of destinations that’ll see you ringing in 2016 in style.

Nearly a million people gather at the world famous Times Square street party in time to watch the countdown ball drop. Don a novelty hat and join the the throngs of revellers for a truly jovial night. Who knows: during Auld Lang Syne it could be you on the big screen. Once midnight has struck, the city has a plethora of parties that’ll keep you dancing well into January.


For traditional festivities head to Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, one of the largest New Year celebrations in the world. This three-day extravaganza sees the atmospheric Old Town swing with choral choirs, entertainers and, of course, fireworks. This is Burns’ country, so come midnight take a dram of whisky and belt out Auld Lang Syne. Heads can be cleared the morning after at Loony Dook: this freezing dip in the River Forth is only for Scotland’s brave.

Nowhere does fireworks quite like Hong Kong. Arrive early to beat the crowds at Causeway Bay or enjoy a cruise of Victoria Harbour and nab a front row seat to one of the world’s greatest pyrotechnics displays. When night falls sporadic sprays of “shooting stars” electrify the dark and countdown to midnight before the sky explodes in a symphony of colour.


Celebrate like a party-hard Berliner for the night and revel in one of the country’s largest open-air street parties. The much-loved event at Brandenburg Gate features live bands, dance tents, great food and litres of German beer. Mesmerising laser shows and fireworks make a show of midnight before Berlin’s infamous late night parties really get going.

The snow-laden streets of Reykjavik feel magical during the long winter nights and make for an enchanting New Year’s Eve. Dotted around the city, large bonfires - or brenna - become meeting places around which songs are sung and drinks are shared amid the snow. A party by the people for the people, Reykjavik’s residents makes sure the friendly schnapps-fuelled festivities peak in an unforgettable illumination of fireworks.


As a party destination the Dutch capital requires no introduction, and it goes without saying that New Year in Amsterdam will not disappoint. Lined with beer tents and alive with music, Dam Square is the most popular place to enjoy the fizz and crash of the fireworks. For a quieter spot to see the spectacular skies, watch from a canal bridge before ducking into one of the city’s renowned late-night clubs.

Las Vegas

Ring in the New Year from the lavish surrounds of America’s famously decadent Sin City. On this night only the famous Strip banishes traffic and fills with revellers: drinks are poured, glad rags worn, and the countdown begins with a jovial carnival atmosphere.

At the strike of midnight, the desert skyline sparkles with a symphony of fireworks that even outshine the neon below.
