Must see:
The Old Town, or Vecriga, is where to begin any serious exploration of the city. Bank on spending at least half a day there, including the cathedral. Round Vecriga you’ll find a whole zone of elegant 19th Century buildings that give the whole city centre a rather elegant feel.

Must eat at:
The Russian influence is still very much here, thanks to Traktieris. As well as traditional Russian fayre (which comes in supersized portions) there’s plenty of vodka to try.

Must be there for:
The International Festival of Animation – or Bimini - comes to town every April, where it takes over a screen at the local multiplex for a whole week to screen over 200 animations, long and short.

Well-travelled tips:
- Take a trip to the Observation Deck of the 97-metre Radio and TV tower for a breathtaking view of the city and its hinterland.
- If you’re into architecture, you’ll probably agree with UNESCO that the art nouveau buildings here are unparalleled anywhere else. Alberta and Elisabetes streets are the places to see them.
