In a city renowned for its high class gastronomy, head to Mk on North Franklin Street and be wowed by chef Michael Kornick’s take on modern American cuisine, including ahi tuna and sautéed veal sweetbreads.

Must be there for:
Get a real taste of Chicago at Taste of Chicago, a whole 10-day uber-festival dedicated to food and drink in the run-up to the Fourth of July celebrations. 3.5 million festival goers can’t be wrong!

Well-travelled tips:
For an authentic flavour of Chicago’s jazz scene, head for the century-old Green Mill Jazz Club on the northside... it’s lost its mobster links but the music is still as real as it gets.
The best way to come to grips with the stunning Chicago skyline is from an architectural river cruise – a fun and educational excursion that runs from April to November.
