Lonely Planet was founded after Tony and Maureen Wheeler left London and hit the road in search of adventure in 1972. They travelled overland across Asia and landed in Australia where, due to numerous questions from would-be travelers, they compiled their journey notes and stapled together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. The company is still driven by the philosophy in Across Asia on the Cheap: 'All you've got to do is decide to go and the hardest part is over.
