Manufacturing market driving international business to Manchester

• 35% of international business travellers coming to Manchester are from manufacturing businesses
• 43% of international business travellers stay 3-5 days
• 19% of businesses identified from TMT and healthcare sectors
The fourth wave of international business traveller research from Deloitte, Manchester Airports Group (MAG) and MIDAS shows that 35% of business travellers coming in to Manchester are from manufacturing corporations. Healthcare and life science industries make up 11% of visitors, with a further 8% of international business travellers from TMT (Telecommunications Media and Technology) firms, showing the growth of the technology and digital healthcare sectors in the region.
Jo Ahmed, Global Employer Services at Deloitte in the North West said: “The north west is a hotbed of manufacturing expertise. We have a fantastic and long-standing track record in the sector and it is extremely encouraging that activity in the region and links with overseas is high. We are seeing a real convergence of medical and creative sectors in the region too, which is leading to some really exciting product development, carving the region’s reputation as a frontrunner in the digital health space.
“We have recognised the importance of supporting businesses on their international journey and through the Deloitte UK Futures programme, we are reaching out to these businesses in their desired locations and providing any necessary guidance to enable them to operate in the most cost effective way. The international business traveller survey shows the continued diversity of business links within our region and the importance of Manchester on the global stage.”
Tim Newns, chief executive of MIDAS, Manchester’s inward investment agency, said: “As Manchester is primarily a services based economy it is interesting to see that a high proportion of international business travellers are coming from the manufacturing industry. These findings demonstrate the importance of advanced manufacturing to the local economy and how vital the international supply chains are in connecting Greater Manchester globally.
“Niche areas of business growth such as digital healthcare and TMT will continue to play an important part in job creation, alongside advanced manufacturing, and Manchester continues to establish itself as a global hub in these fields. We are keen to encourage more international businesses to invest in Manchester and to utilise our highly-skilled talent pool and create jobs; we will use the data to leverage opportunities in this area.”
The survey also revealed that most international business travellers stayed in the North West (67%), while 16% visited Yorkshire and 4% travelled to both the North East and East Midlands.

I’m encouraged that both established and emerging sectors are bringing in international business visitors and we’re confident that the completion of Airport City will lead to a further increase in the volume of traffic.
“Manchester is a city of international business standing and the volume of traffic we’re seeing through the terminals substantiates it. It’s extremely important that emerging economies appreciate the benefits of doing business in the region and we will continue to drive this message home in the future. Deloitte, MAG and MIDAS complete the business traveller survey every six months in order to monitor and react to trends and changes in international business traveller behaviour. Over 250 business travellers were surveyed throughout May and June 2013 in the fourth wave of research. The results are collated as part of an on-going improvement strategy on behalf of the collective organisations.
