Manchester Airport to break 20 million passengers mark this Summer with seventeen new destinations
18th April 2013
Manchester Airport has launched its Summer schedule and expects to pass the 20 million passenger mark this year, thanks to the 17 new destinations on offer this Summer.
In Summer alone, the airport expects over 14 million passengers to pass through the doors, with the busiest month expected to be August with just over 2 million passengers jetting off for their annual Summer holiday. When comparing these figures with the previous year, the airport has seen a 4.5% increase in traffic in 2013 and has now seen 11 months of consecutive growth.
Ken O’Toole, Chief Commercial Officer for MAG, owners of Manchester Airport, said: “This Summer season will add to a strong performance over the last 12 months for us. We have delivered 11 consecutive months of growth and in January this year, we saw the strongest passenger growth for any major UK airport.
“Not only are we delivering growth, we are offering our customers more choice than ever before and we are proud to be ever strengthening ourselves as the airport for the North. Our ‘Fly Manchester’ campaign is targeting passengers and encouraging them to use Manchester over others and we want to continue the upward momentum.”
With seventeen new destinations, the airport stands above other UK airports, as well as offering over 200 destinations throughout the year. For the 22 million people that live within two hours of the airport, this means easy access to a wide range of destinations, with the largest amount of low cost routes available right on their doorstep.
New for Summer will be Athens with new airline, Aegean Airlines, as well as Cairo with new airline, EgyptAir. New offerings from easyJet will include Keflavik in Iceland, Prague in the Czech Republic and Venice in Italy. Ryanair are also increasing their route network and introducing new services to Corfu, Krakow in Poland, Lanzarote, Paphos in Cyprus and Trapani in Sicily. In addition, Jet2.com will begin new services to Corfu, Menorca and Zakinthos.
For those customers looking to travel further afield for their Summer holiday, a brand new service to Moscow with easyJet is now on offer, in addition to the existing popular routes of Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.
The package holiday operators have also expanded their services for 2013, with Thomson introducing flights to Almeria in Spain and Marsa Alam in Egypt. Looking further forward, Thomas Cook, recently launched weekly Caribbean flights to Antigua, St. Lucia and Barbados for the end of the year, making it even easier for customers looking to travel to these destinations, without having to travel to via a London airport.
To get passengers holidays off to the best start, Manchester Airport has secured more top brand retailers in its terminals. A new Paperchase store, which stocks innovative stationery and gifts, has opened in Terminal 1, while WHSmith have opened their first dedicated children’s store in the UK, Zoodle, in Terminals 1 and 2. The stores opened in February and have been designed with the young traveller in mind.
For that extra special experience, the airport’s Escape Lounges are now in all three terminals with the latest opening in Terminal 3 this year. For something entirely different, passengers can also visit the newest addition to Terminal 1, The Grain Loft. The bar and restaurant has a distinctive style, with sounds pods that allow guests to eat and drink to the sound of their own iPod playlist, whilst pouring themselves a pint of locally brewed ale from the self-serve beer taps.
To further promote the destinations and services on offer from the airport, Manchester Airport launched its ‘Fly Manchester’ campaign in early 2013. The campaign mainly targeted passengers from its catchment area that currently use other airports. Earlier this month, the airport launched the second phase of this campaign, branding the airport as the low cost airport for the north of England, rivalling its competitors in the region.
Manchester Airport is the global gateway for the North of the UK and the largest airport outside London with over 200 destinations served by 65 airlines. For more information about flights visit: www.manchesterairport.co.uk
