Manchester Airport hits 20m passenger target ahead of schedule
30th May 2013
During the course of the last twelve months, Manchester Airport, the gateway to the North of England, has breached the 20m passenger mark for the first time since May 2009.
Since 31st May 2012, the airport has seen 20m passengers use the airport and its range of international destinations that include Abu Dhabi, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Singapore, Las Vegas and Moscow.
Etihad Airways passenger Janine Simons was named Manchester Airport's 20 millionth passenger and was awarded prizes when she turned up to her flight to the Middle East this morning. She said: "What a lovely surprise! I love the airline and the service is excellent. I'm a frequent flyer as my husband lives in Abu Dhabi and the Etihad flights fit really well with my schedule. For a long-haul flight, the prices are really good value. I had to move my flight several times so to be told I was the 20 millionth passenger at the airport and be awarded all these fabulous prizes was a surprise. I don't usually get to travel business class so this is a lovely treat!"
Janine was presented with a package of prizes to celebrate the achievement including an upgrade on her flight with Etihad Airways, tickets to a Manchester City game, 50,000 Etihad Guest miles, fast track passes for security, Escape Lounge access, free car parking as well as retail vouchers from World Duty Free and Café Balzar in T1.
Etihad Airways have a strong presence in Manchester. They are the national airline of the United Arab Emirates and began operations in 2003. The airline commenced operations from Manchester on March 26 2006 and in 2012, based their European Contact Centre at the Airport City site.
James Hogan, President and CEO of Etihad Airways, said: "This is a terrific achievement but no great surprise given the continued success we see day-in, day-out at Manchester Airport. Manchester is a key point on our expanding global network and our two flights a day to Abu Dhabi are growing in popularity with business travellers and holiday makers who either visit the UAE's capital city or jet onto Asia or Australia.
"We are proud of our strong links with the city from our sponsorship of Manchester City Football Club to our fast-growing contact centre here at Manchester which now employs more than 200 people and we congratulate everyone at the airport in hitting the 20 million passenger milestone."
Recent passenger stats revealed that Manchester had marked a 12th consecutive month of year on year growth, with international scheduled flight traffic up by 6.2%. Additionally, the airport’s successful ‘Fly Manchester’ campaign has been running across Yorkshire and Cheshire since February, raising awareness of the array of flights available from the North’s global gateway.
Charlie Cornish, Chief Executive of the Manchester Airports Group (MAG), said: “This was a target we’ve had our sights on this Summer and I’m delighted we’ve reached it ahead of schedule. We’ve worked hard to highlight the routes and services available here from all of the airlines and spread the message across the North of England. We believe Manchester can play a bigger role in serving the needs of passengers whether they fly long or short haul. We’re not going to stop here either and want to get past the peak of 22m we reached in March 2008.”
The airport is expecting a busy Summer season with over 14m passengers expected to use Manchester Airport in the Summer months.
