MAG signs partnership agreement with UBM Aviation to develop route strategies for Asia

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has signed a partnership agreement with UBM Aviation, the owners of Airport Strategy & Marketing Ltd (ASM) and Routes, as part of its strategy to broaden the airline network into the growth market of Asia.
UBM Aviation specialises in the supply of data and information products, market intelligence, news and events related to the global aviation industry. MAG will use advice from UBM Aviation to help grow its influence on the route network, as they have their own expert team based in Asia.
MAG owns and operates four airports in the UK at Manchester, East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside. MAG also runs the property development firm MAG Developments, of which Airport City at Manchester is one of the major projects currently being delivered. It is expected to turn the site into a global business destination over the next ten to fifteen years.
The route network has been in the ascendancy over the last 13 months with Manchester rising to the position of third largest airport in the UK ahead of Stansted, after seeing a year of passenger growth as airlines have added more connections. For the last two Summers, Manchester has had more new routes launches than any other airport in the UK. During that time, Emirates have brought in an A380 to serve their Dubai route and increased to three daily services while Thomson Airways recently announced their intention to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Florida and Mexico as part of the Summer 2013 programme.
Ken O’Toole, Chief Commercial Officer for the Manchester Airports Group (MAG), said: “In a difficult market place, our aviation team have worked hard to deliver growth back into the airports we operate. Manchester has seen over a year’s worth of positive performance, which has seen large number of passengers return to fly from our airports. Alongside our airlines, we’ve given them the services and frequencies that they require and that has seen some large airlines choose Manchester over the likes of other airports. We want to continue that upward trend and UBM will be an important partner in the delivery of that objective. We have our eyes fixed on growth areas of the globe, of which the Asia-Pacific region is core, and we believe that we have much to offer airlines as they look to service the UK market.”
MAG is increasingly looking to growth markets in the Far East as its looks to widen its network. In 2011, Manchester was named the sister airport to Beijing Capital International Airport – the second largest in the world. The airport is already the main hub in China and handles 74 million passengers a year whil also acting as a gateway to hundreds of other Far East destinations.
From links with new economies of this nature, MAG is also aiming to attract global firms to Airport City – the £650m Enterprise Zone project on the Manchester Airport site that is expected to create more than 10,000 full-time jobs in the region over the next 10-15 years.
