Love is in the air as Valentine's city breaks boost airport numbers

20th March 2014

Love was in the air for passengers at Manchester Airport during February, with passenger numbers leaping to 1.23 million for the month – up 2.9% on the same time last year – as romantics took advantage of Valentine’s Day falling on a Friday.

The numbers saw Manchester approaching the 21m passenger mark with the moving annual total now standing at 20.8m. The airport’s highest passenger figure stood at 22m during 2007 and Manchester’s growth sees it remain the third largest airport in the UK and the gateway to the North of England.

Ken O’Toole, Chief Commercial Officer for MAG, owner of Manchester Airport, said: “The continued growth is great news for the region and demonstrates the gradual improvement in our economy, with people and businesses across the North taking advantage of the vast array of global options we provide, flying direct from the North of England.”

During Summer 2014, Manchester will see major new routes launching including new long haul services to Charlotte in North Carolina, USA with US Airways; Jeddah in Saudi Arabia with Saudia Airlines and FlyNas in April and May respectively. While Air Canada Rouge will also launch their Toronto service during June. Ryanair have added six new routes to Barcelona, Bologna, Lisbon, Zadar, Fuerteventura & Gran Canaria taking their total to 36 from Manchester.

US Airways will be moving from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 to locate alongside American Airlines, now that the two airlines have merged. US already serve Philadelphia from Manchester while American fly to New York JFK and Chicago. The merger has created the largest airline in the world with connections to every major city across the USA and beyond.

Also during the month, the airport route network was further strengthened by airlines such as Thomas Cook who announced Sal in Cape Verde as a new year-round holiday destination from November 2014, with weekly flights from Manchester. announced weekly flights to Turin to capitalise on the ski season and special shopping trips to New York for Winter 2014.
