Is, though genuinely historic most famous for its role in the Cuban Revolution of the late 1950s, and the activities of one Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Elsewhere, this cultured and laid-back University town has much to offer those who venture in from the coasts, including wonderful period buildings and neat, pristine squares.

Must see:
It would be disrespectful not to come all the way to Santa Clara and not visit the Monument and Mausoleum of Che Guevara, who played such a pivotal role in the battle that made this town famous throughout the land.

Must eat at:
The Paladar Bodeguita del Centro is a homely spot for a feast... serving up all manner of local specialities in the front room of a house, festooned with graffiti, for good measure.

Must be there for:
January 1st is a day to celebrate on a whole number of levels – the dawning of the new year, and another year in the history of the Cuban revolution, which marks its 50th anniversary on 1st January 2009.

Well-travelled tips:
- Beware the city’s bicycling hustlers, or jineteros, which are the only blackspot in an otherwise safe town.
- If you’re in town from October to April, check out the local baseball team – Villa Clara – in action at the Estadio Sandino.
