Manchester Airport Recognised by Big Tick Award

Airport Academy job scheme flies high along with other ‘Big Ticks’ at prestigious awards ceremony.

Scoring with companies such as Barclays Bank, Marks and Spencers and KMPG, Manchester Airport was short listed for its support for local unemployed people, removing barriers to employment resulting in job recruitment.

Manchester Airport Managing Director, Operations & Services, Andrew Cornish, attended the event held at the Albert Hall.  The grand final winners were announced by HRH The Prince of Wales, President of Business in the Community and former Vice President Al Gore.

Mr Cornish said: “The Airport Academy scheme has only been up and running for two years. Therefore just being short listed for this prestigious award is a great accolade for Manchester Airport. We often hear of how the aviation industry contributes towards the economy but this is a real life example of how Manchester Airport supports its local community.  This scheme offers real opportunities to local residents who otherwise may not have the skills or confidence to apply for jobs.’

Airport Academy is a scheme funded by the airport’s Community Relations department.  A course, which is aimed at long term unemployed and targeted to residents in regeneration areas, was piloted in 2005.  In two years the Academy has trained 150 people, 65 of those candidates have since started work.  It has also delivered 3 70 training hours, enabling 125 people to gain level one qualifications in an area where over 13 000 have no formal qualifications.

Now in their 10th year, the Awards for Excellence are the most influential UK awards recognising the positive impact of responsible business operations and activities have in the marketplace, the workplace, and the environment and community.
