Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
On the Dominican Republic’s Northern coast
Puerto Plata has more to its name than beautiful golden sandy beaches and swanky resorts (which it has in abundance). Look beneath the surface and you’ll find jeep tours, waterfalls, deep sea fishing, whitewater rafting, snorkelling, mountain biking, horseback riding and more...

Must see:
When you’re in the area, it would be almost rude not to partake in a touch of whale watching. Between the months of December and March it’s quite a local sport.
Must eat at:
Head to nearby Sousa, and up to the clifftops in search of On The Waterfront, which is one of the coast’s more romantic spots for a bite to eat.
Must be there for:
The Dominican Republic’s tropical climate is at its least clement between May and November when the rain can be heavy at times... to see the island at its beautiful best, the good old British winter is the best time to go.
Well-travelled tips:
- If you want a different experience from the ubiquitous taxis, try the local buses – or guagua – but be prepared for a tight squeeze.
- Sousa’s main beach is good for snorkelling – so don’t forget your mask if you’re heading that way.
Visa:
British citizens need a tourist card to enter the Dominican Republic. For more information, please click here.
Duty free shopping:
As the Dominican Republic is outside of the EU, you can benefit from duty free prices on certain items purchased when travelling to Puerto Plata through our terminals. More information.
