Must see:
Head out to the Sete Cidades and relish the view. These twin lakes, filling the massive caldera of a once mighty volcano, are the best place for a photo opportunity on the whole island. Ask the locals to explain why the lakes are a slightly different colour.
Must be there for:
Summers on the island tend to be warm and humid rather than scorching, so it’s perfect for walking in the open air. Out of season it can get wet and foggy, as the Atlantic Ocean exerts its influence.
Well-travelled tips:
- The topography and relatively sparse population of Sao Miguel mean that the best way to explore is by hire car – much of the island isn’t covered by public transport.
- Hire a boat from the harbour (or look for an organised cruise) and go whale and dolphin watching offshore.
Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit the Azores.
