Must see:
When in Pisa, one must do the Tower. Now saved from collapse (thanks to a spot of heavy-duty underpinning) the fabled Leaning Tower is the centrepiece of a whole set of fantastic buildings all in the same complex on by the Piazza dei Miracoli, including the duomo and baptistery.

Must eat at:
If it’s Tuscan and traditional you’re after, spend lunchtime at the authentic Ostreria dei Cavalieri on Via San Frediano for a taste of the whole region.

Must be there for:
The annual Luminaria festival every 16th June sees the lights dimmed along the Arno and 10,000 candles lit around town. It’s beautiful – even when the obligatory fireworks begin.

Well-travelled tips:
- Take a guided tour of the town that includes the amazing Navi Antiche, sunken Roman ships discovered inland in the late 1990s and now being carefully preserved.
- For the best of the local beaches, head to nearby Viareggio, a short distance to Pisa’s north-west corner.
