Get out of town and thoroughly unplug in the laid-back resorts and beautiful sandy coves of the Costa Smeralda – the Emerald Coast.

Must be there for:
The chic resort of Porto Cervo, on the Costa Smeralda, plays host to some of Italy’s most upmarket sport every April and May when the Polo Gold Cup comes to town. Expect horsey types with Italian accents.

Well-travelled tips:
- If you’ve hired a car, take the road between Alghero and Bosa, for truly spectacular scenery to rival the best coastline on the Med.
- Spend a day on one of the world’s first branded beaches. The Fiat Playa at Porto Rotondo, every July and August, has a chilled vibe and all mod cons including a resident DJ.
