Mombassa, Kenya

Mombassa

On the lush Indian Ocean coast of Eastern Kenya

Mombasa is everything you’d expect from an African city – chaotic and ramshackle, yet strangely peaceful in parts. Away from the centre of Kenya’s second city, shanty areas give way to seemingly endless beaches, rumbling to the sound of the surf on offshore reefs, and world class inland game reserves with the best of Africa on show.

Must see:
Whatever you do, see inland Africa as it really is. The Tsavo Game Reserves (East and West) carefully protect some of the continent’s most endangered wildlife – offering an unparalleled opportunity to see the original ‘Big Five’ beasts in their natural habitat.

Must eat at:
If you’re going to eat in Mombasa itself rather than one of the coastal resort hotels, try the Indo-African Restaurant on Haille Salassie Road for a curry and a half. It serves-up authentic Indian cuisine for a lot less than you’d pay back home.

Must be there for:
Hot, dry conditions in January and February bring the visitors en masse – but out of season, from March to May, when it’s rainier, prices tend to drop (and there’s still wildlife aplenty).

Well-travelled tips:
When arranging your tour of the Game Reserves, choose carefully. An overnight stop-over could give you the chance to see creatures too timid to show themselves during the day.
Don’t wander the streets of Mombasa alone at night – it’s not worth the hassle. Find a taxi instead; you’ll spot them not by a light on the roof but by the licence papers stuck to the windscreen.

Visa:
British citizens need a visa to enter Kenya. For more information, more information
