Must see:
Check out the view from the roof of Milan’s central hub, the Duomo, which is topped-off by the Madonnina (little Madonna), who looks protectively down and over the city.

Must eat at:
For traditional cooking – and hordes of delighted locals – book yourself in at Trattoria Milanese, just a stone’s throw from the Duomo, for risotto, osso buco and devastatingly good minestone.

Must be there for:
The annual Oh Bej! Oh Bej! Celebration (a local mispronunciation of ‘che belli’ or ‘so beautiful’) around the Basilica of St Ambrose every December is a classy Milanese Christmas Fair... and neatly coincides with the opening of the winter season at La Scala opera.

Well-travelled tips:
- Travelling from Milan Bergamo Airport to the centre of town is easier by bus than train – direct buses leave from right outside the terminal.
- If you’re out late on a Saturday night, don’t fret. The local transport staff stay up late, too... the metro runs until around 2 in the morning.
