Must See:
Neuschwanstein Castle - a fairytale palace and inspiration for Disney’s world-famous Sleeping Beauty Castle. The castle’s stunning architecture, beautiful interior and breathtaking views over Bavaria make for a popular tourist destination. Neuschwanstein is about an hour’s drive from Memmingen and can also be reached by public transport.

Must Eat At:
Zur Blauen Traube (The Blue Grape) for authentic German cuisine. The restaurant is centrally located in a pedestrianised street just off the main square (Kramerstrasse) and includes outdoor seating.

Must Be There For:
Fisher Day (Fischertag) – an annual event to commemorate the centuries-old practice of clearing the local river of trout in order to drain off and clean the channel. Nowadays, all the local “fishers” gather on the first Saturday morning of the summer holidays to compete for the title of Fisher King, awarded to the person who catches the heaviest trout! The festival is accompanied by traditional ceremony and exuberant celebration.

Well-Travelled Tips:
The Bayern Ticket (or Bavaria Ticket) is a brilliant way to travel around Memmingem and the surrounding region, including Munich to the east. A ticket costs about €30, is valid for up to 5 people and can be used on the entire public transport system of Bavaria. From when you first use it, the card will be valid until 3am the following day. On weekdays you can only start using it from 9am.
