Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech

Classically North African

The ‘Red City’ of Marrakech is a fascinating urban hub that mixes ancient ritual with modern high density living. Morocco’s third largest city is now home to a million people – and it shows. Go, expect crowds everywhere, new scents and sensations, a visual feast, over-the-top shopping... and get set for some serious haggling!

Must see:
Chaotic and heaving, the souks are not for the faint-hearted, but they are, of course, the place to go if you want everything from a cashmere scarf for around £10 (or less) to an intricately woven carpet – but you’ll need to haggle, as it’s a way of life.

Must eat at:
If you’ve had enough of the food stalls, Diaffa on Rue Jbel El Akhdar occupies one of the Medina’s oldest and most rustic spots, serving-up delicious Moroccan cuisine reminiscent of imperial times.

Must be there for:
June’s Festival of Folklore has been around for decades in the ground of the Palais el-Badi, with an evening fantasia, complete with Berber horsemen, outside the city’s ancient defences.

Well-travelled tips:
When you’re haggling, start at 50% of the asking price, don’t become aggressive, and always be prepared to walk away (this can usually kick-start a new round of discounts!)
Visiting a hammam for a decent (and highly relaxing) pamper and scrub is one of the best ways to de-stress after a hard-day’s haggling.

Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to enter Morocco on holiday. Your passport, however, should be valid for at least six months. For more information, more information

Duty free shopping:
As Morocco is outside of the EU, you can benefit from duty free prices on certain items purchased when travelling to Marrakech through our terminals. More information.
