Must see:
Museo del Prado, one of the world’s finest art galleries, is a cultural mecca in the heart of lush grounds. Millions make an artistic pilgrimage here every year.

Must eat at:
Chantarella on Calle Doctor Fleming is not the place to go for a dose of penicillin but a perfectly cooked baby suckling pig – a real local favourite for a real special occasion.

Must be there for:
The Noche en Blanco – or White Night – is the best time to see the best of Madrid’s nocturnal culture (and there’s a lot of it), every September full moon. Some of the most famous artistic venues in Spain stay open all night.

Well-travelled tips:
· Taxi ranks in Madrid are few and far between... it’s easier to hail a cab off the street than spend hours searching for a rank.
· Don’t rely on the citizens of Madrid to be as knowledgeable about English as their counterparts on the Costas. It helps to have a few words of Spanish up your sleeve.
