Lahore, Pakistan

Lahore

Pakistan’s second city (and Punjabi capital)

Offers the visitor a stunning visual treat, with perfectly preserved Mughal and colonial architecture in abundance, jostling with the chaotic trappings of the modern South Asian city. Known as the City of Gardens, it owes much of its greenery and order to its former rulers; a legacy that offers some respite from the extremes of climate.

Must See:
You’ll be drawn to the 60-metre minaret known as the Minar-e-Pakistan; a modern-day monument to Pakistan’s quest for freedom – climb the stairs (or take the lift) to be treated to a rewarding panorama.

Must eat at:
At The Mall in the Bagh-i-Jinnah area is Dum-Pukht, a locally celebrated spot with more than a penchant for all things sweet – you can even pick up takeaway delicacies at its pastry shop.

Must be there for:
Go upscale and mix it up with the local notables at the Lahore Polo Club. The polo season runs from October to April – and the club’s lounge is a world away from the throng of the streets outside. A perfect spot for a decent cuppa.

Well-travelled facts:
· Some historians have traced the origins of the city back over 4,000 years.
· The city’s record temperature is a mind-boggling 55C – reached in 1921 and again in 2007.
