Kavala, Greece

Kavala

Eastern Macedonian coast of northern Greece

Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have all had a go at shaping Kavala, on the eastern Macedonian coast of northern Greece. Today it’s a fascinating product of all of these and more, in addition to being one of the key jumping off points for the islands of the northern Aegean including Thasos. Expect ancient cobbled streets, hidden tavernas and a steep climb to the impressive hilltop fortress.

Must see:
Take a 45-minute hydrofoil across the water to nearby Thasos and spend a day or two exploring at your own pace. Base yourself in the port of Limenas (also known as Thassos Town) and hire a bike to explore the delights of the coast road and its many secluded beaches. A real delight.

Must eat at:
When you’re in Kavala or its nearby beach villages, it would be almost rude not to partake in a little grilled fish. Most restaurants offer fish as a mainstay of the menu, with specials, depending on the catch of the day. Don’t be afraid to ask if you can’t see what you want.

Must be there for:
Summer brings out the drama in Greece and the Greeks! The ancient amphitheatre in Philippi is no exception. Check locally for dates and times of plays in the summer months.

Well-travelled tips
:
•         If you can, stay at the Hospes Amerigo Hotel. A beautifully converted former Dominican convent bang in the centre of old Alicante, it’s chic and contemporary, with a stunning rooftop swimming pool.
•         Buses are a great and cheap way to get around town, with fares for most journeys in Kavala starting at around 1 euro. Taxis are cheap, too. The local licensed cabs are silver, and shouldn’t charge much more than 3-5 euros for a journey in town.
Walk up the hill to Profitis Ilias for a rewarding view down over the city and out towards the Aegean.
