Izmir, Turkey
Bustling commercial coastal centre on the Aegean
More akin to Mediterranean Europe than inland Turkey, much fought-over Izmir is a bustling commercial coastal centre on the Aegean with an amazing 5,000 years of history to look back on. Today, it’s firmly and proudly Turkish, and the only competition is likely to be for the best spot in the sun at nearby spots including Foca, Dikili, Urla and Seferihisar.

Must see:
The view of the city and the Aegean from above town is well worth the climb, if you fancy the exercise. However, depending how you want to get up, there’s either the modern Teleferik or the more historic Asansor to help you up to your bird’s eye view. There are restaurants at the top of both attractions.
Must eat at:
The Izmir Ticaret Odasi Lokali is a mouthful to say – and a delicious mouthful to eat at. This eatery is a lunchtime favourite with the locals drawn to its regional grilled cuisine and occasional culinary surprises.
Must be there for:
The International Izmir Festival draws performers from across Europe to the city every June and July. The performances in the ancient ruins of Ephesus, a 50 minute drive from the city, are a real highlight and simply have to be seen.
Well-travelled tips:
An hour from Izmir, Tire is home to what’s said to be Turkey’s biggest open air market on Tuesdays.
Take a walk to Alsancak in the city for a Greek-style drinking experience – the area is full of converted houses now home to backstreet drinking dens.
Visa:
British citizens travelling to Turkey do need a visa, unless they are cruise ship passengers who enter the country for a day trip and return to the ship the same day. British citizens may obtain a multiple entry visitor's visa valid for 90 days at the port of entry on payment of £10 in cash.
Duty free shopping:
Although Turkey is in Europe, it is outside of the EU Value Added Tax Area so you can benefit from duty free prices on certain items purchased when travelling to Izmir through our terminals. More information.
