Must See:
Take a trip to the outskirts of modern Heraklion and marvel at the ruins at the palace of Knossos, which marked the ceremonial and political centre of the once mighty Minoan civilisation.

Must eat at:
Locals descend in their droves (always a good sign) to the Heraklion Sailing Club for seafood including a whole abundance of charcoaled fish and award-winning mussel risotto.

Must be there for:
Kalokerinou Street is the place to stand back and watch the annual St Minas Parade, when the townsfolk take to the street to celebrate the memory of their patron saint.

Well-travelled tips:
Horse lovers can find refuge at Karteros, about 4 miles out of town, where you can ride along the stunning beach, or take lessons locally.
