This second largest of the Canary Islands chain is unashamedly a beach-lovers paradise. With a climate akin to Florida, it has more to offer than miles of golden sands and world class resorts. Strong winds whip the Atlantic into a frenzy, so it’s a mecca for surf dudes, windsurfers and kitesurfers, of all shapes and sizes.

Must see:
A five hour round trip to Pico de la Zarza offers tremendous views as well as Martian style-like rocks reddened with geothermal heat.

Must eat at:
For its superb position right on the seafront at Corralejo, head to La Cabana Asturiana for delicious traditional cuisine – a welcome change from fish and chips!

Must be there for:
When the wind gets up in mid-summer, the world’s kiteboarding fraternity will drop in for the Canaries leg of their Grand Prix tour. Expect to see them at dates throughout July and August.

Well-travelled tips:
Getting the bus in Fuerteventura is a comparative pleasure – they’re frequent, cheap, and, most importantly, air conditioned. Better still, they make exploring the coast really easy.
The arid heart of the island deserves exploration, if you’ve got a hire car and a map (or a navigator). Climb into the mountains and discover how the locals managed to eke out a living at altitude.

British citizens do not need a visa to visit the Canary Islands.
