On the shores of beautiful Lake Constance, Friedrichshafen is a modern alpine gateway with both Switzerland and Austria on its doorstep. The once mighty Zeppelin was made here in its heyday, and you can still take modern Zeppelin trips over the lake today. Indeed, drawn by its proud reputation for industry and innovation, the town is now a pretty place to come for all sorts of conferences and congresses.

Must see:
The recently opened Zeppelin museum, housed in a converted railway station by the lakeshore, is a temple to Friedrichshafen’s pioneering aviation work. With a mock-up of an old Zeppelin passenger compartment – and more – it’s an absorbing way to spend an afternoon.

Must eat at:
Go west, 4 miles west to be precise, and you’ll reach Fischbach, where the Hotel Restaurant Maier serves-up all sorts of hearty local cuisine including herring, venison, goulash and more, all washed down with delicious pastries.

Must be there for:
Ham it up by the lakeside. Friedrichshafen is home to Europe’s largest convention for radio hams. The next gathering is scheduled for June 26-29 2009.

Well-travelled tips:
· From here, you can catch the car ferry across to Romanshorn in Switzerland and a multitude of other interesting towns and villages along the lakeshore.
· A boat trip to the nearby university town of Konstanz will fill you in with more on the Ferdinand von Zeppelin story – this was his birthplace.
