Taipei

On the very northern tip of Taiwan, Republic of China, humid and subtropical Taipei is every bit the ambitious Asian metropolis, and as home to the world’s tallest building, you can feel compelled to look up wherever you go. Not surprisingly, it’s one of the most densely populated spots on Earth, but despite its teeming masses, it’s easy to get around, with highly efficient public transport.

Must See:
The multiple viewing galleries of Taipei 101 (so called on account of its 101 floors) are a drop-dead gorgeous way of taking in the entire city and far beyond from the world’s tallest building.

Must eat at:
In the old town centre you’ll find a local institution – Tainan Tan-Tsu-Mein – which, despite its opulent European-influenced decor, is thoroughly Taiwanese in its foodie thinking, with trademark noodles to die for.

Must be there for:
If you’re on a budget, avoid Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb) and opt instead for Ghost Month in the seventh month of the lunar calendar – the city will be quieter (as locals believe it’s bad luck to do pretty much anything) and the mood and traditions will be fascinating.

Well-travelled facts:
· Until the completion of the Burj Dubai in the UAE, Tapei 101 will still have the status of the world’s tallest finished skyscraper.
· The night markets in Taipei traditionally open around 4pm and often continue until as late as 2am.
