Shanghai
China
Sitting proudly on the banks of the Yangtze River delta, bustling, 21st century Shanghai is a modern day economic marvel, which, in less than 20 years has been transformed from a run-down backwater into China’s most populous city... an international showpiece of glimmering neon – and out-and-out symbol of the new China. It’s everything you expect when seen from above, and, at ground level, a whole lot more.
Must See:
Take the train, but not any old train. The ‘floating’ Maglev covers the 30km from Longyang Road to Pudong International Airport in just 7 minutes at speeds of up to 430kmh (267mph).
Must eat at:
For a delicious taste of old Chinese ambience – and a cracking view of the mid-lake Pavilion Tea House – look out for the Green Wave Gallery in the old town... and transport yourself back centuries.
Must be there for:
Chinese New Year (January/February) in Shanghai takes the form of the Spring Festival, when you can expect the whole city to grind to a halt. You won’t have to look far to find dragon and lion dances – Longahu Temple always has plenty to offer.
Well-travelled facts:
· The city’s Oriental Pearl Tower has no fewer than 11 spheres, of which the second highest has a revolving restaurant.
· Shanghai is susceptible to freak weather – including typhoons which whip-up across the South China Sea.
