Phuket
Thailand
Thailand’s largest island, Phuket is a tropical jewel that juts out into the Andaman Sea. A modern day tourist haven, visitors from around the world are drawn to the beaches, resorts and nightlife in and around Patong. Inland, it’s a different story as lush tropical plantations dominate the landscape, with pockets of government-protected rainforest. Meanwhile, offshore, plentiful islands and islets make for excellent snorkelling.
Must See:
If you can, take a short boat trip to the Sirinat National Park on the island’s northern coast, famed for its marine conservation and sea turtles.
Must eat at:
In the heart of Phuket Town, Ka Jok See is part gastrodome, part camp cabaret, part institution. Expect a mix of Thai, seafood and floorshow. Book ahead to be part of it yourself.
Must be there for:
If you like your veg in quantity and quality, make a date to be in Phuket in early Autumn for the centuries-old Vegetarian Festival, for fun, food, and fireworks.
Well-travelled tips:
· Sun-worshippers know the place with the best beaches. Follow them, and you’ll find Phi Phi – for sand that’s fine, pure and white.
· Take a boat to Don Phi Phi and imagine yourself into Leonard di Caprio’s head... it’s the picture-perfect spot where The Beach was filmed
