Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia
Malaysia’s capital and first city is a remarkably organised, civilised place – with a relatively small population (1.6 million), a year-round equatorial climate and a lush hinterland. The skyline, like its recent history, is a mix of old colonial, Malay, Islamic, modern and postmodern influences, giving it a genuinely cosmopolitan feel.
Must See:
Take in a view of your world from the double-decker Skybridge on the 41st and 42nd floors of the legendary Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin buildings.
Must eat at:
It’s possible to eat almost anything in KL, given the city’s multiple influences. But if the cultural crossroads is too much for you and you simply need a recommendation, head for Al Nafoura at the Meridien Hotel in Brickfields for Middle Eastern cuisine with sumptuous surroundings – and a belly dancer to match.
Must be there for:
September is the month to be in KL for Malaysia Fest, a fortnight-long celebration of local arts, crafts and culture – rich in tradition, heritage and colour.
Well-travelled tips:
· Haggle yourself silly in the legendary KL night market... when bargain hunters come out and stall-holders do battle. Never, ever, accept the first price.
· As public transport is under-developed in KL, taxis are the best way to get around – they’re plentiful... and relatively cheap.
Visa:
British citizens visiting Malaysia on holiday are provided with a free Social Visit Pass on arrival, valid for up to 90 days. Conditions apply, so please visit http://www.kln.gov.my/perwakilan/london
