Delhi
India
Ancient Delhi is one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities – and it shows. Now, the historic capital has given way to cosmopolitan modernity (at least in part) where temples and mosques sit cheek-by-jowl with high-rises and malls. Modern Delhi is a bustling and highly ambitious city, with a very real sense its going places – it’ll host the first ever Indian Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2010.
Must See:
Head down the Yamuna River to take in the majesty (and sheer scale) of the Akshardham Temple complex, one of the world’s largest Hindu temples, for architecture on an awe-inspiring scale. If you get bored, it has an IMAX cinema for good measure...
Must eat at:
It could be a street name in any British city, but Delhi’s Connaught Place plays host to myriad eateries, of which the oddly named United Coffee House (at the even more oddly named 15 E-Block) is a fabulously retro place to come for an eclectic mix of Indian and international cuisine.
Must be there for:
In a whole year of festivals (with 5 major religions to mark, everyone gets a go) the festival of Holi, in early Spring (February and March) is an opportunity to see the city at its most colourful – as locals take to throwing coloured powder and water around.
Well-travelled facts:
· A human settlement was most likely established in Delhi in the second millennium BC – and people have stayed here ever since
· 175 of the city’s monuments have been declared National Heritage Sites.
