Peshawar

Peshawar is a frontier town in every sense. As the hub of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan, it’s been fought for and ruled over by nearly a dozen different empires in its time, leaving a historical legacy like few other places. Now as a modernising city of 3 million, it’s home to a dazzling cultural mix... and the starting-point of some of the most adventurous travel opportunities on the planet

Must See:
The Khyber Steam Safari has to be experienced to be believed. Tracking 42 kilometers through 34 tunnels and 92 bridges and culverts, it offers vintage views... and vintage accommodation on its 1200 metre climb from Peshawar to Landi Kotal.

Must eat at:
In frontierland, it’s best to eat like a frontiersman – and Khan Klub by the New Rampur Gate in the Old City serves up a whole dose of just that – in the form of a traditional Afghan feast, topped off with saffron rice pudding and green tea.

Must be there for:
More a long-term happening than an event, the slowly unfolding story of the archaeological excavations at Ghor Khatri offer a unique insight into Peshawar’s distant past. Now extending some 15 metres below current ground level reveal the city’s many different eras.

Well-travelled facts:
· Peshawar is one of the major settlements on the ancient trading route, the Silk Road.
· Until as late as the 1950s, Peshawar was completely enclosed by a city wall containing 16 gates.
