Must see:
The Royal Mile, the spine of the Old Town running between the Castle and Holyrood House, is a must-walk mile for every visitor to the town... but it’s easier done downhill!

Must eat at:
Give your wallet a workout and walk up the Royal Mile to the Witchery, possibly Edinburgh’s most romantic (and atmospheric) gastrodome – it’s small, perfectly formed, and beautifully candlelit. And the food is excellent.

Must be there for:
The Edinburgh Festival, and its associated Fringe, Jazz and Blues Festival, Book Festival and TV Festival are, for three weeks in August, a cultural high, with thousands of performances encompassing raucous stand-up comedy to the highest forms of art.

Well-travelled tips:
If you fancy a break from the artsy stuff, head south to Hillend for a quick scoot down one of Europe’s largest artificial ski slopes.
In a city full of atmospheric pubs, try the legendary Canny Man’s in genteel Morningside for hand-pumped ales and a choice of around 100 open sandwiches.
