The ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’

The ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ is one of Croatia’s most-visited spots, and with good reason. This ancient walled city, one of the most beautiful towns on the entire Mediterranean, is now repaired and back in business since playing an unfortunate part in the civil war of the 1990s. With high stone walls, impressive battlements, winding back streets and a picturesque port, it’s the stuff that movie sets are made of. Better still, it’s real and waiting to be explored.

Must see:
The best views in town are from the Old City Walls, which you can now walk for just a few kuna. Whether you’re looking out to sea or back to town, the views are stunning and you’ll definitely want to take your camera.

Must eat at:
Upmarket Nautika on the waterfront, not far from the old city gate, has sea and city views to die for, not to mention some good value tasting menus.

Must be there for:
Established 50 years ago, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival is one of the longest-running cultural events in Europe, and draws musicians, actors and dancers from around the continent over a six week period from mid July to the end of August.

Well-travelled tips:
Dubrovnik has more than its fair share of churches and monasteries, if that’s your thing. For a beautiful baroque interior, visit St Ignatius on a hill in the old town.
ATM machines are at a premium in Dubrovnik, and you’ll be lucky to find one outside the Old Town. Best to stock up on cash while you’re there.
