Manchester to Manhattan as Business Club launches in New York

MIDAS, Manchester’s Investment and Development Agency, and Manchester Airport are to launch Manchester Business Club in New York. The launch is part of a continued drive to build links between Manchester and leading global city economies.

The New York branch of the Manchester Business Club is the third in the series and will be attended by Tim McDermott, Director of Operations at Manchester Airport. The airport works closely with MIDAS to promote the Business Club network. Other attendees include representatives of Manchester Business School, American Airlines, Continental Airlines and other companies with links to the Manchester and the UK North West region.

An evening reception, for an exclusive audience of leading individuals and businesses, will take place on 12 May at Soho House New York and will provide an opportunity for guests to network and to strengthen the business links between Manchester and New York.

The keynote speaker will be Sir Harold Evans, a critically acclaimed journalist and best-selling author specialising in the history of America. Sir Harold, who was born in Manchester and started his career at Manchester Evening News, now lives in New York. He has also served as the prize-winning editor of The Times and The Sunday Times. He is now editor-at-large of The Week magazine. In 2004, he was honoured with a knighthood in the Queen's New Year's Honours list for service to journalism.

Andrew Cornish, MD, Manchester Airport said: “It’s great to see the business community in Manchester and New York joining forces especially with the additional capacity provided by the launches of Delta and American Airlines' services to JFK alongside those provided by Continental and PIA. Links that are made at the Business Clubs can help to build stronger economic links between foreign companies and those based in the UK, which can also assist the development of our route network and the choice of flights from Manchester.”

The event comes after successful launches of Manchester Business Club in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Zoe Ensor, Director of External Relations, MIDAS said: “MIDAS is delighted to host the Manchester Business Club in New York. As with earlier events, it’s set to be a high-level networking opportunity for like-minded businesses and an opportunity to build and strengthen ties between the two cities. We’re very excited about welcoming Sir Harold Evans as the keynote speaker and look forward to hearing his speech.”
