At the southern end of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast

Bourgas (or Burgas) is a businesslike city with an ancient heritage, boasting both Greek and Roman origins and influences. Today, it’s Bulgaria’s largest port and the gateway to the resorts and towns of the Black Sea – and unlike the fashion for concrete elsewhere in this part of the world, it’s worked hard to keep its architectural heritage in place.

Must see:
The Skydog Fly Centre is the place to go to take in a whole different view of the coastline. They offer paragliding and moto-paragliding, with tandem flights available for the fainter-hearted.

Must be there for:
While mid-summer on the Black Sea can, like the Med, be a touch stifling, coming off-peak has its advantages. Take a trip to Bourgas in April, May, September and October and see a different side to the region... not to mention extremely clement weather.

Well-travelled tips:
Exploring the summer resort towns and villages on the coast is a pleasure in itself. Sozopol, Sunny Beach are to be recommended.
The after-party set usually head to Barcode, under the Summer Theatre, which has an eclectic music policy and a friendly vibe.

Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Bulgaria.
