Boa Vista is Portuguese for ‘good view’ – and you can take this translation literally, as the azure sea stretches away from miles and miles of unspoilt golden sand. This is the most eastern of the Cape Verde chain, a mere 300 or so miles from West Africa. Inland, there’s a mix of dry desert, forests and valleys – but the beach is where you’ll see all the action, including dolphins and turtles.

Head out from your hotel, go exploring and it’ll reward you to discover Pico d'Antônia, the island’s national park.
Must eat at:
Take the advice of the locals and follow a well beaten path (and several flights of stairs) to Grill Luar for local specialities including fresh fish, all topped off with a magnificent view of the harbour.

Arriving in Cape Verde in late summer is often a perfect opportunity to get down – there are music festivals in Baia Das Gatas (Sao Vicente) in late August and Sal in mid September.
Well-travelled tips:
• If you’re independently-minded, head for Sal Rei, the island’s main town and explore on foot. It’s laid out on a grid system and easy to get around.
• Use Sal Rei as a jumping off point for further adventures and hop on a ferry – there are routes to Santiago, Sal and Maio.
