Berlin

Real Style

Europe’s most energetic, resurgent and resplendent capital has transformed itself inside and out since the Wall came down in 1989 to become a multinational hub, a hedonistic party town, a cultural focal point and (yes) a place to eat, drink and be merry. For a city break with real style, Berlin is indeed uber alles.

Must see:
Take the S-bahn to Alexanderplatz and keep looking up. The Fernsehturm – or TV Tower – is a symbol of East German might that now everyone can enjoy. The observation deck – at 204 metres – delivers a fantastic view of the unified city.

Must eat at:
Eating at the Fernsehturm is an awe-inspiring place to spend a long lazy Tuetonic lunchhour (or two). The tower’s restaurant level rotates gently, taking approximately 30 minutes to spin you around the 360 degrees of Berlin.

Must be there for:
Take your time to soak-in the culture in January and August thanks to the Lange Nacht der Museen, which sees the city’s museums and selected key venues open til 2am.

Well-travelled tips:
· The German capital is dotted with flea markets – some impromptu and others much more established. Take the S-bahn to Tiergarten to discover the delights of the flea market on Stasse des 17 Juni.
· For a stylish evening’s clubbing, with an amazing view of the city, and dinner to boot, head to 40 Seconds on Potsdamer Stasse for its three roof terraces and mainstream house and R&B.
