Put heavy industry behind you and seek out the Palm House in the Botanic Gardens; 168 years young and still going strong.

Must eat at:
See Belfast’s only Michelin-starred chef in action at the eponymous Restaurant Michael Dean on Howard Street, for local cuisine and service with all the trimmings.

Must be there for:
The cultural renaissance in Belfast has spawned a huge interest in local food and drink – which sees its peak in the annual Food and Drink festival in September. Enough reason to come, eat, drink and be merry.

Well-travelled tips:
Orientate yourself towards the Europa Hotel and look out for Robinson’s Bar which has traditional live music on offer every day.
For bargains aplenty, head to St George’s indoor market on May Street near the central station – it’s the largest covered market in Northern Ireland.
