Must see:
For a bit of culture and history all in one, set your sights on the Castillo de San Jose, a 17th century fortification that’s now home to an interesting collection of modern art

Must eat at:
La Tegala, in nearby Macher, is one superb room with a view. Perched on high, its floor-to-ceiling windows and three separate salons offer an ultra-modern take on Canarian cuisine.

Must be there for:
Any time of year you can visit the volcanic moonscape of Timanfaya National Park, which covers a quarter of the surface area of the island. Tranquil and just a touch eerie in parts, it’s scarcely changed since the volcano’s last eruption nearly 300 years ago.

Well-travelled tips:
Transformed into a luxurious boutique hotel from a former private villa, the Hotel Boutique la Quintahas just 19 rooms to its name. It’s handy for beaches and the golf course... if you can be tempted away from its sumptuous pool.
Lanzarote can sometimes get windy, particularly in mid summer... so take extra care when you’re out and about on a push-bike or moped.

British citizens do not need a visa to visit the Canary Islands.
