Control Tower Bar takes shape at Manchester Airport

The first stage of the world’s first Control Tower Bar has been completed and opened today at Manchester Airport.

Epernay Champagne Bar has opened its third instalment in the UK but first within an airport in Terminal 1 at the base of the Control Tower concept that was announced in November 2009. Manchester Airport announced last year that it would be redeveloping a spare control tower facility into a new leisure outlet.

Phase 2 of the development at the airport will be the redevelopment of the upper level above Epernay’s new bar.

Epernay began operating in Leeds in 2005 and their bars stock over 100 champagnes sourced from large and small houses throughout Champagne. Epernay opened its second bar in Manchester in 2009 and is now making its debut in the airport sector.

Ryan Thomas, Marketing Manager of Epernay Champagne Bars, believes that “Epernay is an intimate unassuming bar that focusses on the all round drinking experience for their customers. With one of the largest Champagne lists in the country, you will be guaranteed to find the Champagne you love.”

If you are new to the world of Champagne, then Epernay’s highly knowledgeable and skilled staff will endeavour to find the ideal Champagne for you. Or perhaps, let them spoil your taste buds and indulge your curiosity with a list of over 80 delectable cocktails, ranging from refined classics to the unique and the contemporary.

With a large variety of bottled beers, delicious wines and premium spirits available all day (covering all flights), Epernay will prove to be the perfect start to any trip.

Epernay Manchester Airport will pride itself on only serving the freshest food, sourced from local produce, where possible. With a mouth-watering selection of breakfasts, pastries, plates and meals to choose from, there is something for every palette. The menu at the new venue will also serve a range of dishes to compliment the range of champagnes including oysters. This will further add to the range on offer in Terminal 1.

Andrew Harrison, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said: “Since we began working on this project at the end of last year, it’s something that’s caught the imagination of many passengers and staff who work at Manchester Airport. I believe it shows the route we’re going with Terminal 1 in catering for all audiences and giving the passenger’s even more choice. The terminal has undergone a rapid period of investment and change over the last few years to improve the customer experience, and we are delighted to welcome Epernay as a new partner and we wish them every success.”

Geoff Thornton, Director of Epernay Champagne Bars said: “Epernay is greatly privileged to have been given the opportunity to operate within Manchester Airport and bring its ideas to a global stage. Being a small company it would be very easy for MAG to have overlooked us or proceeded down a more traditional route by using a well established and national operator for this unit, however the retail team have shown us tremendous support in not only accepting us but in developing our Epernay brand into a viable airport offering. We hope to provide a unique and memorable experience to passengers enhancing the already excellent terminal 1. We are all very excited about Epernay Manchester Airport and look forward to being a part of this fantastic operation in this and future developments.”

Epernay has taken the first phase of the Control Tower Bar on the ground level. The decommissioned control tower is arranged on four main levels with an observation level on level five. The areas are connected by a circulation core, which is serviced by a dedicated passenger lift within a central core.

The iconic elevated 110sqm space is located at the heart of Manchester Airport’s new Terminal 1. The upper level area has 360 views around the airport and airfield and expressions of interest can be directed to Jane.Nicholls@manairport.co.uk.
