Zurich, Switzerland
The unashamedly businesslike headquarters of Switzerland plc
Zurich is more than a city of pin-striped bankers and ultra-secret safe deposit boxes. As befits a town of business people, it more than justifies its reputation for cleanliness and efficiency. There are truly impressive places to eat and drink, too, and more than a fair share of art and culture.

Must eat at:
Hiltl is sheer veggie heaven. As one of Europe’s first ever vegetarian-only restaurants, it’s had time to perfect its offering, which involves costing your meal by its weight.
Must be there for:
If you like your music loud and your bass-bins trembling, come to town for Streetparade on the second Saturday every August. With dozens of trucks acting as sound systems on wheels, it has the reputation as Europe’s largest open air rave.
Well-travelled tips:
- In the summer, take a lake steamer out on the beautiful Zurichsee to Rapperswil at the lake’s southern end.
- Le Corbusier, the Swiss architect famous for his ‘cities in the sky’ built a villa here. Today, you can see its cleverness and modernity up close.
