Waterford, Republic Of Ireland
Refined and cultured
Waterford on the coast in Ireland’s south-eastern corner is synonymous with crystal, a legacy of one of its most successful industries. In fact, glass has been made here ever since 1783 and today you can sample the artisanship behind some of the city’s most beautiful creations. With a rich maritime history to explore and its Georgian architecture still intact, Waterford has much to please the eye.

Must see:
No trip would be complete without a chance to visit (and shop til you drop) at the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre where you can take a tour and meet the masters at work.
Must eat at:
The trip out to Cheekpoint, just 7 miles from Waterford, is well worth the journey for the honest home cooking (and hand-written menu) of the highly recommended Cottage Bistro, which is so much more than a bistro in a cottage.
Must be there for:
The Imagine Arts Festival, in late October, is a unique celebration of a spectrum of creative arts that gets as interactive (or passive) as you like. Now in its 7th year, it’s full of workshops, showcases and inspiring performances.
Well-travelled tips:
Down a pint of the black stuff at Downse’s on Thomas Street, an ultra-traditional haunt where conversation is their music and mobile phone ringtones get the thumbs down.
To see a working fishing village in full swing, head ten miles out to Dunmore East for the freshest catch and some awe-inspiring views.
