Tripoli, Libya
Undiscovered Tripoli
Has, for 2700 years, been a centre of culture and learning. Now it’s there to be explored by a new generation of travellers. With a peerless sea view, and a Mediterranean climate to go with it, Tripoli is as yet undeveloped and unexploited – with fabulous beaches a short walk from town, and a refreshing lack of familiar chain stores.

Must see:
Pay homage to the only surviving Roman monument in the city – the Arch of Marcus Aurelius – which dates back to the time when North Africa was part of the Empire.
Must eat at:
For a ruinously cheap night out, try the Al Athar restaurant, which, near the Marcis Aurelius Arch, is appropriately called ‘The Ruins’. Once you’ve got over the setting, turn your attention to the menu – and go for the traditional clay pot dishes. Delicious.
Must be there for:
Warm springs and autumns are the best time to visit Tripoli – avoiding the harsh summers and wetter winters (which run from November to February, bringing just a few inches of rain a month).
Well-travelled tips:
- Brush-up on your Arabic, especially when you’re eating out... English is not as widely spoken as elsewhere in North Africa.
- Alcohol isn’t available in Libya – so you’ll need to acquaint yourself with local non-alcoholic alternatives.
Visa:
British citizens need a visa to travel to Libya. For more information, please click here.
