Shannon, Republic Of Ireland
Shannon new town is the gateway to County Clare
One of only two ‘planned’ towns on the island of Ireland – achieving town status as recently as 1982 – it is home to the vast Shannon Airport, which boasts a long military and transatlantic pedigree. You’ll want to venture further... and so you should. Look beyond the town and you’ll find a county steeped in tradition, with a welcome every bit as warm.

Must see:
Venture further afield to take in the unique flora and fauna of The Burren and the spectacular Cliffs of Moher which cascade endlessly towards the Atlantic.
Must eat at:
Finish a bracing round at the Doonbeg Golf Club with a bracingly fine meal at the Long Room in its clubhouse where chef Aidan McGrath keeps it fresh, local and simple.
Must be there for:
No visit to Shannon or County Clare would be complete without a trip to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park – a beautifully restored country estate with walled gardens, medieval banquets and even a live recreation of 19th century Irish life.
Well-travelled tips:
You can get pretty much anywhere in Ireland by bus from Shannon. No fewer than 136 buses leave the airport every day…
A trip out to the Aran Islands (not to be confused with Scottish isle of Arran) is well worth it – remote they certainly are, but what they lack in mod cons, they more than make up for in beauty.
