Must see:
Take a trip just 5km up the coast to visit the ruins of Nicopolis, the town founded by Octavian in 31BC to celebrate his victory over Mark Antony.
Must eat at:
The streets around the pedestrianised Old Quarter are where to head for a cut-price feed in Preveza. Alternatively, take a look at the eastern waterfront, overlooking Actium. Just follow the locals and you’ll be fine!
Must be there for:
High summer in Preveza, especially August, can be very hot, with temperatures consistently over 30°C. However, the weather remains very balmy through September and well into October when the Ionian Sea starts to get a little choppier.
Well-travelled tips:
- The massive fortifications of Ayiou Andreou are well worth a visit if you’re all Romaned-out. You’ll find them up on the hill overlooking the port.
- If you’re travelling independently and need to get into town in a hurry, you’ll find plenty of cabs at the airport willing to do the 7km journey in no time at all. It’s quicker than waiting in the heat for a local bus.
